Deaf Awareness Essentials

Self-paced

Enrol

Full course description

This 30 min short course/training has been developed in collaboration with Deaf Communities across Wales to increase health care workers’ understanding of the world of Deaf and Hard of hearing patients and improve Health services.

Did you know that more than 16% of the UK population is Deaf or hard of hearing? That could be the next person you support.

Deaf and hard of hearing people are often at a disadvantage when accessing health and care services. Most staff have had little Deaf awareness training and may not know how best to communicate.

This can lead to misunderstandings or errors, contributing to lower satisfaction with services among Deaf and hard of hearing patients.

We have developed Deaf Awareness Essentials for those working or studying in health and care settings. You may already support Deaf or hard of hearing patients or want to feel more confident in doing so.

Through this course you will learn about:

  • Types of deafness
  • Deaf culture
  • Barriers to communication
  • The impact of poor healthcare experiences
  • How to improve communication with Deaf people
  • The role of a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Communicate effectively with Deaf and hard of hearing people
  • Understand the impact of deafness
  • Identify and help reduce access barriers in health services
